CHIST-N138-The Rise of American Catholicism, 1808-1908 (1 CEU)

This online individual course (formerly 306-0523) is part of a series that addresses the history of the Catholic Church in North America from the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 to the present time. This course will chart the progress and effect of Catholic immigration on parish life, the establishment of the parochial school system, and the work of the Baltimore councils. This course will also address the conflicts that resulted from the ethnic diversities in American Catholic culture and the role of Catholics in the Civil War. Students who complete this course should be able to summarize the development of Catholicism in the United States during this century of immigration, urbanization, and the Civil War.
